چکیده

11 Interference between successively learned tasks is widely investigated to study motor 12 memory. However, how simultaneously-learned motor memories interact with each 13 other has been rarely studied despite its prevalence in daily life. Assuming that motor 14 memory shares common neural mechanisms with declarative memory system, we 15 made unintuitive predictions that mental rehearsal, as opposed to further practice, of 16 one motor memory will temporarily impair the recall of another 17 simultaneously-learned memory. Subjects simultaneously learned two sensorimotor 18 tasks, i.e., visuomotor rotation and gain. They retrieved one memory by either 19 practice or mental rehearsal and then had their memory evaluated. We found that 20 mental rehearsal, instead of execution, impaired the recall of un-retrieved memory. 21 This impairment was content-independent, i.e., retrieving either gain or rotation 22 impaired the other memory. Hence, conscious recollection of one motor memory 23 interferes the recall of another memory. This is analogous to retrieval-induced 24 forgetting in declarative memory, suggesting a common neural process across 25 memory systems. Our findings indicate that motor imagery is sufficient to induce 26 interference between motor memories. Mental rehearsal, currently widely regarded as 27 beneficial for motor performance, negatively affects memory recall when it is 28 exercised for a subset of memorized items. 29

Short-term memory loss over time without retroactive stimulus interference.

A key question in cognitive psychology is whether information in short-term memory is lost as a function of time. Lewandowsky, Duncan, and Brown (2004) argued against that memory loss because forgetting in serial recall occurred to the same extent across serial positions regardless of the rate of recall. However, we believe Lewandowsky et al. (2004) only prevented one of two types of rehearsal;...

In search of decay in verbal short-term memory.

Is forgetting in the short term due to decay with the mere passage of time, interference from other memoranda, or both? Past research on short-term memory has revealed some evidence for decay and a plethora of evidence showing that short-term memory is worsened by interference. However, none of these studies has directly contrasted decay and interference in short-term memory in a task that rule...

Effect of variability of combined practice (physical and positive self-modeling) on memory reconsolidation and motor skill transfer in children

In this study we manipulate structure of combined practice (physical along with self-modeling of positive self-review) to examine its effects on motor memory reconsolidation process and motor transfer in children. 36 female students (9-12 years old) from Maktabi elementary school of Qom trained Dart throwing. Of the 15 trials (from 1.5, 2, and 2.5 meters in blocked order), Positive self-re...
